The basic function of the heart is to pump the blood which is then circulated to the entire body. Heart failure occurs when the heart fails to pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs.
Nowadays heart failure has become a common ailment across the globe and is the root cause of many heart-related diseases.

Some people have such severe heart failure that surgery or medications don't help. They may need to have their diseased heart replaced with a healthy donor heart. Heart transplants can improve the survival and quality of life of some people with severe heart failure. However, candidates for transplantation often have to wait a long time before a suitable donor heart is found.

Heart transplant surgery is mainly performed for cardiac failure, which could be due to any of the following diseases:

• Cardiomyopathy or weakening of the heart muscles
• Previously failed heart transplant procedure
• Coronary artery disease
• Cardiac valve disease
• Congenital heart defect
• Amyloidosis
• Abnormal heart rhythm
